Interventions//

Interventions are client and family centred, evidence based and approaches applied are used internationally.

Interventions are tailored to meet the needs of the individual and their family but are primarily home based programs and require commitment, diligence and partnership between you the parent, your child and the therapist. This methodology may not be applicable or accessible for some individuals this is why the initial screening process is so important.

Programs usually incorporate a home intervention plan, functional goals, parent advice, education and information to support success.

Specific interventions can include:

Reflex Inhibition/Stimulation

Dr Peter Blythe founded The Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology (INPP)* in 1975. Dr Blythe’s work specialises in the assessment and remediation of retained primitive reflexes beyond the first 6 – 12 months of life and the absence or underdevelopment of postural reflexes by age 3 ½ years. A series of developmental exercises known as the INPP Method have been devised and used successfully internationally. Neuro Developmental Therapy is concerned with identifying underlying physical factors in learning, attention and behaviour issues and is based on an understanding of the neuro science of human development.

Bilateral Integration

This programme was devised by Mrs. Sheila Dobie OBE and is designed to develop excellent coordination, balance and postural control allowing for appropriate development and enhancement of sensory systems and the establishment of moving and thinking skills which lead to multi-processing and multi-tasking abilities. There is now a strong evidence base supporting the link between motor performance and cognition recognising the links between the cerebellum, movement and cognition along with an understanding of the neurophysiology of learning difficulties and the implication of poor integration at the level of hemisphere function. Bilateral Integration is an evidenced based intervention, which targets improved synchronicity of the two brain hemispheres to affect positive changes in both cognitive and motor systems promoting integration and connectivity in the brain. This intervention is applicable across the entire spectrum of ability from children with developmental disorders up to elite athletes.

Sound Therapy

Can be used to improve efficiencies in neural connections in the brain and enhance hemisphere functions which can have an impact on Auditory Processing, Communication, Executive Function, Social & Emotional Function, Stress Response, Motor Coordination and Creativity.

  • Johansen Individualised Auditory Stimulation (Johansen IAS)

This intervention programme was devised by Dr Kjeld Johansen, a Danish teacher and psychologist. Johansen IAS is an individually-tailored listening programme that stimulates auditory processing skills associated with speech, language, communication, concentration, attention and aspects of working memory.

  • The Listening Program (TLP)

This intervention program is designed by advanced brain technologies and is a music listening method, personalized to improve brain fitness at any age or level of ability.

Sensory Integration

Dr. Jean Ayres is the original guru in the field of sensory integration. An understanding of typical and atypical sensory development and sensory function is applied to supports and advice on Sensory Processing Disorder, Sensory Diets and Management plans.

Education:

Education and parent support is incorporated throughout the intervention process to support parents to better understand their child’s unique strengths and challenges and to source additional supports, tips or services when relevant to meet the varied and often complex needs of a child with a developmental disorder and their family.
